Chinese Carbon Steel Bars Make Debut in Overseas Markets, Opening New Export Chapter

A landmark event in China's carbon steel bar industry: 60 tons of high-quality low-carbon hot-rolled carbon steel bars from a leading Chinese iron and steel enterprise recently departed from Shanghai Port bound for the United Arab Emirates, marking the first export of high-quality special steel products by the enterprise and signaling Chinese carbon steel bar manufacturers' active expansion into the global market . This export comes at a time when China is implementing new steel export license management, highlighting the industry's shift toward high-quality development.

Carbon steel bars, primarily composed of iron and carbon, with trace elements such as silicon, manganese, phosphorus, and sulfur, are classified based on carbon content and strength grades. The exported low-carbon hot-rolled carbon steel bars comply with GB/T701-2008 standards, featuring low strength and hardness, high plasticity and toughness, strong corrosion resistance, and low production costs . High-strength structural carbon steel bars such as S355J2G3, with a minimum yield strength of 355 N/mm², have a chemical composition with a maximum carbon content of 0.22%, silicon of 0.55%, and manganese of 1.60%, ensuring excellent weldability and cold-forming properties .

Carbon steel bars are versatile in applications, serving as core materials in construction, machinery manufacturing, and infrastructure projects. The low-carbon hot-rolled carbon steel bars exported by the enterprise can be processed through drawing and cold heading to produce fasteners, standard parts, and welded products, enabling flexible production and replacing some welding and cold-heading steels . High-strength grades like S355J2G3 are widely used in freight cars, transmission towers, cranes, highway bridges, offshore structures, and power plants, meeting the stringent requirements of large-scale engineering projects .

The enterprise's successful export is a result of its focus on high-value-added product research and development. Through its high-quality special steel quality improvement project, the company has achieved mass production of high-value-added products such as wire drawing materials, hard wire, and welding wire steel, with monthly output and sales of low-carbon hot-rolled carbon steel bars stabilizing above 10,000 tons . The company has 10 new product projects included in a provincial 2024 key new product development catalog, covering corrosion-resistant rebar, high-strength rebar, and special welding wire steel .

Against the backdrop of China's new steel export license management policy, which emphasizes quality inspection and structural optimization, the enterprise plans to produce 1 million tons of high-quality special steel in 2025, with high-value-added varieties accounting for over 30% . The company will continue to deepen its presence in high-quality wire rods, fine plates, and high-performance construction materials, while actively exploring overseas markets to form a new pattern of domestic and international market synergy . Industry insiders believe that with more Chinese enterprises focusing on product quality and technological innovation, carbon steel bars will gain greater competitiveness in global emerging markets such as the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia.
