A recent milestone in China's stainless steel industry has drawn international attention: domestically developed 2507 super duplex stainless steel seamless pipes have been successfully applied in China's South China Sea Lingshui 17-2 gas field development project, marking a key breakthrough in high-end pipes for marine engineering . This achievement not only enhances China's competitiveness in the global high-end stainless steel pipe market but also opens up new opportunities for exports amid the global push for energy infrastructure development.
Stainless steel pipes are alloy products primarily composed of iron, chromium, nickel, and molybdenum, with their chemical composition determining key properties such as corrosion resistance and strength. The 2507 super duplex stainless steel pipes, independently developed by Zhejiang Wuyue Stainless Steel Co., Ltd., feature a precise element ratio: 25% chromium, 7% nickel, and 4% molybdenum, achieving a pitting resistance equivalent (PREN) value of 45, far exceeding the 32 standard of ordinary duplex steel . For mainstream 304 stainless steel pipes, the 18% chromium and 8% nickel composition ensures excellent corrosion resistance and cost-effectiveness, making them the preferred choice in multiple industries .
The 2507 super duplex stainless steel pipes have demonstrated exceptional performance in harsh marine environments, withstanding 150MPa pressure, 120℃ high temperatures, and high-chloride seawater corrosion, boasting a service life of 25 years—50% longer than traditional 2205 duplex steel pipes . They have passed the NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 sour corrosion resistance certification, suitable for harsh working conditions containing H₂S and CO₂, with a corrosion rate of ≤0.001mm/year in seawater, far below industry standards . Previously, such high-end pipes were fully imported at a unit price of 80,000 yuan/ton with a delivery cycle exceeding 6 months, while the domestically produced version offers superior performance at a 30% lower price and a 45-day delivery cycle .
Stainless steel pipes find diverse applications across global industries. In the oil and gas sector, they are critical for high-pressure fluid and gas transportation; in construction, they are used for structural support, railings, and pipelines; and in the pharmaceutical and food processing industries, their hygienic and non-reactive properties make them indispensable . China's stainless steel pipe exports have been expanding steadily, with recent shipments of 80 tons of 304 stainless steel seamless pipes to Germany for use in construction and machinery manufacturing .
With the global demand for marine engineering and energy infrastructure on the rise, China's stainless steel pipe industry is well-positioned for growth. Zhejiang Wuyue Stainless Steel has built a production line with an annual capacity of 20,000 tons of 2507 super duplex stainless steel seamless pipes, with products widely used in deep-sea oil and gas, seawater desalination, and chemical industries . As China advances its "Ocean Power" strategy, the market demand for high-end stainless steel pipes for marine engineering is expected to grow by 28% in 2025, providing strong momentum for export growth . Domestic enterprises are also actively exploring markets in Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries, leveraging the region's booming oil and gas industry to expand their global footprint .
